Hello all,
I have been spending some (considerable) time trying to understand and solve my problem. The synopsis is that I had the identical problem which AcesWild experienced. I did some operation with my Windows 98 PC (either a delete or save operation on the smartmedia card) and when I placed the card in my S90 the keyboard would not recognize the card. I received a "card not formatted" or "card not ready" error and was not able to see any of the files or even reformat the SmartMedia card. After surfing the net, I became convinced that something had been corrupted in an area of the SmartMedia card called the CIS block. Furthermore, the way SmartMedia cards are formatted, the CIS blocks are not accessible via a normal hex editor. The CIS blocks are physically formatted in the first two memory blocks of the SmartMedia card and the file system (FAT12 or FAT16) will only read and write to blocks 3 and up.
The corruption of the CIS block appears to be a known problem with some of the digital camera applications, specifically cameras which have the panoramic picture capability. The only easily obtainable solution which keeps showing up in the various internet discussions is to locate a program called SMPREP.EXE which was distributed with some of the older Dazzle SmartMedia readers. Checking out the Ziocorp.com site and downloading some of the online product manuals, I found references to SMPREP with the products which do not conform to USB 2.0 speeds.
This evening I took a chance and picked up a Dazzle reader, model DM8200 and installed the included drivers on my PC. I followed the directions to format the card using the Dazzle reader drivers:
1. Insert the bad SmartMedia card
2. Click on "My Computer"
3. Right click on the removable drive icon and select "Full Format"
The SMPREP program was launched by the reader driver and I was very pleasantly satisfied to see a popup notice that the CIS block was damaged. The SMPREP program then proceeded to rewrite the CIS blocks followed by a format of all block sectors. After all was said and done, the S90 now recognizes the SmartMedia card and I was able to reformat the card using the S90. I was also able to copy my backup files from my PC to the card and read/access the card from the S90. It looks like I was able to successfully restore the card thanks to the SMPREP program.
Hope this information helps.
